To mark the Centenary of Women’s Suffrage we invited 130 women and girls aged 8-85 to describe what it feels like to be a woman.
This is what they said.
"There is a way for us to be heard...but I think we're up against it. Jenny Sanderson
In Autumn 2018, 130 women and girls aged 8 to 85 raised their voices. They whispered, sighed, roared and sang. We Are Warriors brings these voices together; in tribute to the women who have gone before; to empower those who will follow; to continue our fight for equality.
Voices were gathered in individual recording sessions and workshops led by In Between Time and Breathing Fire Theatre Company. The workshops included women and girls from women’s groups and schools across Bristol including Bristol Drugs Project and Gloucester Road WI. Together they discussed class, intersectional identity, the effect of WWII on women’s rights and the progress that has been made in the last hundred years.
Experience their collective roar to the future at Arnolfini, 1-16 December.
We Are Warriors is created by Helen Cole and commissioned by Bristol Women’s Voice for the Deeds Not Words programme of events to mark 100 years since the first women were allowed to vote. It has been produced by In Between Time, is funded by Government Equalities Office and Arts Council England and is supported by Arnolfini.
