About Helen Cole

Helen Cole is the Founder and Artistic Director/CEO of In Between Time.

Helen began her career as a producer in Manchester in the mid-90s, where she developed interdisciplinary projects in unusual locations: urban car parks, disused warehouses, building sites and deserted shopping centres.

It was in Manchester that Helen honed her interest in contemporary practices beyond the mainstream and her belief that the experiences of live ideas and emerging artistic forms can benefit a wide range of people.

She was appointed Senior Producer at Tramway, Glasgow in 1996, and in 1998 moved to Bristol to become the Live Art and Dance Producer at Arnolfini.

Helen established the Arnolfini live programme as one of the most influential live art and contemporary performance programmes in the UK. She created the first In Between Time Festival at Arnolfini in 2001, as an international biennial of live art and future performance practices.

In 2009, the Paul Hamlyn Foundation awarded Helen a prestigious Breakthrough Award. This honour recognised Helen as an exceptional cultural entrepreneur and enabled her to establish In Between Time as an independent organisation and to develop the festival and other extraordinary projects.

Cole creates and curates unusual immersive encounters between people.

In 2009, Cole created We See Fireworks in which the voices of strangers gently unfold in the darkness to reveal haunting, vivid memories of incredible performances.

In 2017, Breathe gathered hundreds of private dances.  Instructed to ‘move from exuberance to exhaustion’ each dance is captured as audio and experienced as an installation of echoes in theatres, galleries and found spaces suffused with shadow and hot white light. These anonymous ‘ghost dances’ come together as an act of mass resistance emitting the tangible, poignant traces of bodies pushed to their limits to conjure the presence of those long since gone.

Described by The Guardian as ‘exquisite’, Helen’s work has been recognised and presented numerous times across the UK and internationally from Australia to Brazil, Europe and the US. Her work has been commissioned by Barbican, Spill Festival, Venice Performance Art Festival, Performance Space Sydney, Panorama Festival (Rio de Janeiro) and PS122 (New York)

Helen is currently creating We Are Warriors, a sound installation made in collaboration with 100 incredible Bristolian women.

Helen mentors artists and emerging producers from across the UK and overseas, works as a writer and curator and sits on symposia, commissioning and selection panels.
